Reconfiguring the closed-off spaces in this traditional 1920’s Westboro neighbourhood home meant building an addition to help open up the interior spaces as well as connecting the inside to the outdoor yard. Equally important to the homeowners was modernizing both the interior and exterior aesthetically as well as the overall performance of the structure (ensuring the most efficient heating, insulation and windows as well as environmentally thoughtful design decisions). Preserving and honouring as many of the original details as possible, the house boasts arched doorways, sculpted crown moulding, refinished original hardwood flooring and mahogany inlayed wood doors. Re-using and adapting as many existing finishes and materials as possible not only helps maintain the original character of the home but helps to reduce the waste caused by such a major renovation. These types of decisions were paired with natural and nature-inspired finishes to bring an overall organic and tranquil feel. Opening up the spaces by creating large archways from the exisiting home to the addition, over-sized windows in the addition, a 12-foot patio door connecting the interior and exterior spaces, helps modernize the planning of the home. Black-framed windows, paired down trim and sculptural lighting help modernize the hundred year old house.
Project Sherwood is the perfect mix of original features and contemporary details creating a timeless look, but even better, it is an example of working with the existing structure to create an environmentally responsible home.
